On a bench by the La Brea Tar Pits, twenty-five year old freelance consultant Nick Conrad sips his coffee and smokes his cigarettes. He has a lot on his mind. There’s the perennial hunt for gainful employment. There’s his buddy Arman, whose self-destructive boozing, coke snorting, and carousing is beginning to take its toll. And then there’s Tara, his ex. She’s found work as a crime reporter, just as a particularly macabre serial killer dubbed the “San Fernando Valley Slaughterer” has started to terrorize the city.
Luckily for Nick, his aunt and uncle have paid him to watch their house in Hancock Park while they take a couple months to travel throughout Europe. He needs the income and free rent, at least until he crosses paths with Lee, a BMW-driving, country-clubbing former coworker of his who may just have a job for him.
Nick bides his time by lounging about in the house and swimming in the backyard when he’s not privy to Arman’s shenanigans or hitting the links with Lee. Nick may feel that life is starting to pass him by, but not without the increasingly frequent interruption of newscasts discussing the murders. And he’s still not quite sure how he feels about Tara. Everything is coming to a head.
From the stately mansions and chic bistros of Beverly Hills to the monotonous theme park motel-dotted streets of Anaheim, Loafing by La Brea takes its readers on a freeway ride through the good, bad, and ugly of contemporary Los Angeles.

Loafing by La Brea eBook Michael Hughes Reviews

Full disclosure- Michael Hughes is a friend from college. However, this review reflects my honest opinion of his book and I'm writing a review because he deserves one for this master piece.
I am an avid reader and I want to say Michael's writing made me nostalgic for several famous writers. I was a big fan of Tropic of Cancer, a best seller written by Henry Miller and I see a lot of the same genius in Michael's work. Michael does not sensor his protagonist's thoughts, he lets us peer into his mind and not only see the characters he created, but also his mind's eye. This is powerful and allows you to embrace the book at a much deeper level.
I have put down several best sellers but I found this book hard to put down. Once I got to the middle especially, I was drawn to read as much as I could as I found myself caring deeply for the characters in the story. Michael is great at combining flaws and heroic traits in each and every of his characters, making them human to such an extent that I felt I was living in the same plane as his characters.
Regardless of your opinion of the protagonist, whether you love him or hate him, he will open his heart to you. You get a strong sense of his world view, moral reasoning, and dilemmas. You do not have to agree with or like the protagonist to enjoy the book and savor it's magic. I think good literature allows you to see things through a new perspective and Michael manages to do that by combining deep characters, taking time to describe the mundane with as much detail as the unique. The protagonist is not trying to impress you, he is merely telling you a vivid story coupled with his opinions, allowing you to make your own decision.
Knowing Michael from school, I know that Michael is a geography buff and really knows his way around Los Angeles. I was glad to see this come across in the book. All in all, I recommend this book. I enjoyed the ride Michael took me on, and think this story is one of those that appeals to a wide range of people.
It's a modern hack job based on classic noir that offers no insight into humanity and nothing in the way of good, engaging writing.
Hughes' book is a fun read. Intelligent and vivid, his writing style places the reader in the protagonist's shoes. His setting is superbly researched, and Hughes nails down the most minute details of the LA environment. Hughes is an excellent writer, and I look forward to his next book.
I downloaded this on my iPad as a reading selection for a recent long haul flight to New Zealand. It was an engaging read filled with whimsical references to iconic LA landmarks that made me nostalgic. I enjoyed following protagonist Nick's daily musings about the world around him; I couldn't put it down. Great start, Michael!
The great thing about Loafing by La Brea is Hughes' Hemingway-esque attention to detail about Los Angeles--both the mundane and the bizarre about the city. The book captures a middle class white millenial experience--the existential crises and all.
Hughes takes the reader on a journey through Los Angeles. The reader is immersed in the development of the protagonist and the daily grind he faces. Overall, I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for a quick read.
Hughes captures life in L.A. through the eyes of a perceptive and candid 20-something troubled by the malaise surrounding him. Lucidly written, this book offers a realistic glimpse into the lives of underemployed youths in the present economy. Hope shines through despite uncertainty on a national, local and even personal level for the protagonist. It is a mysterious thrill ride that dovetails nicely with spot-on critiques of our culture.

This book will appeal especially to Millennials who acknowledge the shortcomings of mainstream political dialogue, and who understand that existential angst today is not merely a facade for effete literati types.
This entire book is the recitation on one guys every day life. Incredibly bad. Guess that is what can happen when people self publish.
