Though Epictetus contends that man has power over his will, he well knew how weak this power sometimes is. An appearance, he says, is presented, and straightway I act according to it; and, what is the name of those who follow every appearance? They are called madmen. — Such are a large part of mankind; and it is true, that many persons have no Will at all. They are deceived by appearances, perplexed, tossed about like a ship which has lost the helm they have no steady, fixed, and rational purpose. Their perseverance or obstinacy is often nothing more than a perseverance in an irrational purpose. It is often so strong and so steady that the man himself and others too may view it as a strong will; and it is a strong will, if you choose, but it is a will in a wrong direction. "The nature of the Good is a certain Will the nature of the Bad is a certain kind of Will."

If you were only allowed to own and read a single book in your entire life, this would be a fantastic choice. You would end up as a whole, solid, dependable, compassionate human being. A person on whom an entire country could be held, as M Cato proved. The Enchiridion are about the simplest, best, most "nutritious" 40 pages I have ever read. You will want to keep a copy at hand, as it will pull you out of many a dark place. Did so for me. From a long line in the bank to my mom's cancer. It's priceless, which is why it is and should be free.

A SELECTION FROM THE DISCOURSES WITH THE ENCHEIRIDION Annotated edition by EPICTETUS Edwin Ginn George Long Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews

Epictetus' advice is remarkable for the way it continues to resonate even today. I found this version fairly readable and enjoyable.
Downloaded this after reading about Epictetus elsewhere. The book is well translated, with few (if any) errors. Worth reading to gain some insight into Stoic thought.
As a budding student of Stoicism I appreciate the ready availability of the classic works by Stoic authors.
This edition of a selection of Discourses of Epictetus is easy to read as it comes in short, bite size chapter and the translation strikes me as being accessible to the lay reader.
I haven't finished yet but I enjoyed it so far. Get this if you have a kindle and enjoy it.
I love the writings of Epictetus and love this one. I gave it a four only because of the degree of difficulty in reading it. You gotta want to read this one )
The Encherdion is a little known INDISPENSIBLE masterpiece on how to be at Peace with yourself and the world. Perhaps this is an indispensable book for smart, struggling teens and anyone with serious emotional or physical pain in their lives.
I picked up this book because Albert Ellis had credited Epictetus as an influence in his REBT Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, and I wanted to read the original for myself. I found out that Aaron Beck also credits Epictetus as an influence in his Cognitive Therapy. High praises!

This free kindle book includes Epictetus' Enchiridion, which is a summary of Epictetus' work, authorized by Epictetus, and a few additions from his longer work, the Discourses. Discourses is not offered as a free kindle book but here is a modern translation
Discourses, Fragments, Handbook (Oxford World's Classics) Robin Hard (Translator), Christopher Gill (Contributor). If you get the free kindle sample of Hard's translation you can read the entire introduction which is very good and clearly summarizes Epictetus' main points even better than this Enchiridion.

So now you have two free ways of understanding Epictetus.

His main point is what has turned into the Serenity Prayer which I paraphrase to match Epictetus' order
God give me the discernment to know which things I can change and which things are not in my power,
God give me the courage to change those things within my power,
God give me the wisdom to leave alone those things that are not within my power.

Cognitive Therapy and REBT are Rational and Cognitive because they ask the person to discern, what is really in my power to change? If X is not in my power to change, and I tell myself I need X, then your life will be anxious or depressing. The cognitive or rational therapist helps you see that the things you tell yourself, lead to the unwanted consequences in your life. Don't tell yourself you need X, if X is something you have no power of! You give your power away when you do that. If you want to be fulfilled and productive, revise what you tell yourself about X. Tell yourself about Y instead, where Y are those things you can change. You can change your thoughts, interpretations, expectations about events in life. Change them, and you will be fulfilled and productive in life.

This is the main thing that Cognitive and Rational therapies have drawn from Epictetus.
You can embrace Epictetus' message very clearly either from the free sample of the Oxford edition of the Discourses, or from this free kindle book translated from Greek into English by George Long in 1900
